So last night Olli and I decided to trust the raving reviews that IO9 has been giving the movie District 9, the newest Peter Jackson movie. And wow, just wow. It was great!
It starts off as a sort of documentary on first contact with aliens. A strange spaceship appeared in the sky over Johannesburg and didn’t move for months. The earth governments finally decided that if the aliens weren’t coming out, they would go in. And what they found is creatures in various state of malnutrition, leaderless, with a spaceship that was immobile, wouldn’t move. And well, what’s the best thing to do then? Try to take care of them. The refugee camp in Johannesburg stayed there for years, while nothing happened. The ‘prawns’ as the aliens are called are sometimes violent, passive, and they don’t really understand the point of ownership… so they often destroy things. They quickly outstay their welcome and their camp turns turned into a slum – and it all comes to a head twenty years later, when they try to move the alien camp (named District 9) to another location… by any means necessary. And that’s where the documentary kind of ends and we get an action movie that is fast-paced, pretty intelligent, sometimes gory, and AWESOME. I love the fact that it takes place in South Africa btw, the scenery and the accents are awesome. Also awesome? The Nigerians!
I can recommend this movie to anyone who’s been sighing there hasn’t been any good movie releases lately, and who’s missing some great cinema. Because this is definitely worth it, in my opinion.
