in which lannie is a fish snob

January 22nd, 2010

It’s a dutch thing: eating raw herring with onions. It’s something I didn’t really understand because before my twenties I wasn’t a great fan of seafood. I distinctly remember my mom giving me some fish when I was five or six and thinking it was disgusting.

Then in my twenties two things happened: one, I started working for company M at the WTC, where all of my nice colleagues were addicted to sushi… and two, we did the Atkins diet for the first time and Olli pushed me to at least try some seafood, because I needed the proteins and stuff.

Because of the love for sushi and things like salmon and fried cod, I thought a while ago that I might like herring after all. We had the best herring supplier in NL right around the corner, so I gave it a shot. And I liked it of course. :)

Anyway, time went by and I had herring at other places as well. I learnt that the supplier at Nuttyville had some nasty herring, that the one in Leiden was good, and that the one in Rijswijk was really one of the best I’d ever tried. And today I bought some on the market that’s right around the office where I work.

NEVER AGAIN.

Fucking disgusting. It was fish bone fiesta in there, and I kept picking them out from between my teeth. I still kind of feel one in the back of my throat.
It’s obvious that I should go to Rijswijk when I crave fish from now on…

who would have thought i’d ever become a fish snob? hahaha!
