Yeah, I saw it in the cinema in May. It was the first anime I really watched and I liked it although it was very weird indeed.
I loved spirited away and didn't find it as weird as you did. Well, actually, that's what I really liked about it. This movie, Princess Mononoke, and (maybe) Akira are the only anime I've ever seen that I really liked. But then, I like movies that are bizarre and full of symbolism. Can't say I remember the light post, though.

I -loved- the spirit she asks into the house and he starts eating everything and everyone one. Also, the river spirit being cleansed was so cool. And the little balls of soot that carry the coal to the boiler! lol!

I love the "other worldliness" I get from watching this movie and Princess Mononoke.

Hmmm...i think i might have to buy this movie. :)

Nope. Didn't see it, and I didn't see Princess Mononoke either (was that any good?). What I did see from the same makers was Grave of the Fireflies which is a beautiful, haunting, horrible, makes-you-shiver-and-cry account of the results of WWII on Japan. The animation is absolutely breath taking.

I heard Spirited Away deals with a young girl and pigs (that's all I can remember) and that sounded kinda weird to me in the first place, so I never watched it.
