connus minimus II report

Sunday, January 8th, 2012

Well, we just got home from the second installment of Connus Minimus. Wendy and Arno hosted the weekend and graciously offered us their hospitality for the duration of the event. Olli and I went together and brought Bodhi, who thankfully behaved well at a strange house.

On Saturday I immediately got into the groove of things; I ran two games as a GM. I did a Penny For My Thoughts game in the afternoon, and one in the evening slot.
It was very exciting, but I forgot quickly enough about how exciting it was and just focused on the great stories that were told based on those very short memory triggers. In the first game (Tijs, Kat, Wendy) alone we ended up with a sister killing a brother, a granddaughter killing her grandfather (and her dog), and a son being beaten within an inch of his life by his father (while uploading the whole thing on youtube). The group had some issues getting into the groove where they had to make sure the Traveller couldn’t make the choice; they had to offer the choice options. But once they got into it, it went very well and they seemed to like the journey.

In the second group (Lie, Bart, Marco) we ended up with a thief on the run causing a lot of collateral damage, a member of the Aryan brotherhood who learned that karma is a real bitch, and a father who saw the son that he gave up for adoption killed before his eyes. Some pretty powerful stories as well! The group reported here as well that it was hard to do a one-off thing and had to create memories out of nothing, but once they got into the groove they loved it, and they said that they would love to do the game again now that they’d gotten into the way it worked. They were especially amazed by the journeys they had taken – stories that came from a few slips of paper.
So all in all the GMing went well, everyone LOVED the system, and we had a good time! :D

Olli and I went home at night and drove back to Breda on Sunday morning, where we did a Grim’s Gangs game with Derek- who had created a scenario where some people in an elderly home cause havoc in the streets of Camden. It was a pretty silly and hilarious setting (count on Derek to come up witah great ridiculous settings :D )
I was the gang leader but I wasn’t very suited to the task, unfortunately – not in the least because I ROLL DICE LIKE ASS. Seriously, not one roll I made turned out well, I fumbled spectacularly on every roll I made and ended up dying in an embarrassing and spectacular fashion. I just shouldn’t play RPs with dice anymore, I just suck at it.
I ended up getting ganked by my own gang members (thanks, Olli ;) ). It was my own fault though. We did get to hurl dirty diapers (and grenades) at police cars, so we had a good time. :)

Anyway, all in all I had a great weekend. Good games, great company, will do again.
When is Connus Minimus III? Do we still have time for that before Condamned, people? :)

back to the real world

Indiecon was a blast. I met lots of great new people and had one hell of a good time. Had lots of great cider (Bulmers is as good as the girls claimed it would be) and played lots of amazing characters in great games. My absolute favourite was Penny For Your Thoughts, of which I would not mind to GM my own game. DAMN what amazing storytelling you get up to in that system! I loved my fellow players and my GM’s – all of them. I was in five games, which I thought was a nice number. I would definitely like to get back to it again next year :)

Wanna see some pictures? Go here! I am waiting for some others to be uploaded by other people, but once I get my grubby hands on them I’ll be sure to put them there as well.

I had some bad news too. My mother’s boyfriend is having serious health issues that are of the scary lifethreathening kind and she is completely fucking devastated. I heard this JUST when I was leaving for the UK, so I resolved to go to her directly afterwards to lend some support. In the end my sister Gitty and I went together. I picked her up on Sloterdijk and we drove to Ermelo together. I am glad that we went and we had a good time (considering the circumstances), but bringing Gitty to Hoorn afterwards made for a five hour drive after a twelve hour car trip back from the UK yesterday and right now I’m really, really tired.

But tomorrow brings a new day and a new workweek. Thankfully this one is only three days long. I can’t wait to get back to writing. I made it to 15K this weekend and didn’t get to write at ALL today, so it’ll have to happen in the following days. Pfff… lots to do, places to be…
I’m wiped! Also, I have a motherfucker of a cold. But after little sleep and lousy food and lots of cider all week that is kind of to be expected I suppose! :’)

this was a triumph- i’ll make a note here: huge success

At Graspop we got to talking about this weekend. Derek is in the Netherlands because of family reasons and cannot be here for our birthdays unfortunately, so I offered to have a bit of a party with him to keep his mind off the family stuff. Also just to have a party with him.
Then somehow we got to talking about Indiecon – the roleplay convention that the RP’ers in our group of friends are going to each year. This year in November Olli and I are going to tag along (it’s going to be really weird not to do any writing early November), and we thought it would be fun to have a bit of a mini-convention beforehand. Derek and Bren both want to GM at Indiecon, and what better to test out stuff and have a bit of pre-fun in July?
Also, it would be good for Ol and me to get a bit more RP experience. Olli doesn’t have any, and I pretty much only have written RP experiece, which is wildly different. I never really saw the fun of tabletopping (I like the process of writing, and having written too much), but yeah, maybe it was time to give it a go. If everybody else says its awesome, it never hurts to try, doesn’t it?

So Connus Minimus was born – our own Mini Con with a silly name. We were with eleven people, so in the end we broke the group in two. Brenda GM’ed one group in a murder/mystery/ghost story setting upstairs in the living room, and Derek GM’ed a group in the dining area downstairs in a Spartacus-on-sea pirates/gladiators setting.

All in all it was a great success. Not only was it just fun to get the whole group together, but we also had a blast of a time roleplaying. I was in Derek’s game and apparently our group was terribly loud: laughter galore. In the end Wendy and I had a showdown between our characters and mine died painfully, but it was still awesome. Wendy and Olli were the only characters that walked away with their lives and pride and money still in tact, but MAN did we had some laughs on the way :D

We stopped gaming around 1.30am, after which more drinking and talking ensued. I went to bed at 4.30am, after a quick walk with Arno, Tijs and Bodhi in the rain. We were all up and about around 9-ish, so I was muchly sleep deprived. While the boys all went to the jam studio I snuggled on the couch with Bodhi, a blanket, and season two of Breaking Bad. I kept meaning to nap, but that series is so awesome I kept thinking ‘one more episode’ until 11.30pm. So now I’m still sleep deprived.

But I had a great weekend, and that’s all that counts. If it has to rain all of July, then at least we can spend our weekends having laughs with our friends, raight?
