So it turns out I’m twice impaired as far as games like Portal 2 go. Don’t get me wrong, I think the game is challenging and hilarious in equal amounts (Wheatley and GlaDOS are both brilliant), but I kind of suck monkey balls at playing. And yeah, I have excuses. Of course I do. It’s always someone else’s fault when you suck right?
*grins* Not quite. I’m not a sore loser, less than most people. I hate losing, but not THAT much.
Still, there is much frustration when I play the game. First of all, I have a very bad 3d insight. I honestly cannot quite connect spatial things. When I did an IQ test it actually turned out I’m pretty retarded at it (no kidding. While my language skills ranged around the 140, I scored about 85 on the insight thing. My regular math was average, and my memory and the rest languished around the 120. This is why I never score very high on IQ test in contrary to some of my talented friends. My spatial/3d insight is retarded. Go me!). So there’s one. Sometimes I’m breezing through a level without too many problems, and at other times I’m headdesking because I HONESTLY cannot see the solution. It mostly has to do when the Portal is not straightforward, and it’s tilted. Because gravity shifts, I completely lose my bearings and even completely forget to take THAT solution in account. Quite fascinating, really! (I’ve started to tell myself that the enemy’s gate is down, but it doesn’t really help *grins*)
The other problem? The controls. It’s been roughly six years since I last played a game that was on the PC, and Portal uses the AWSD keys on your keyboard to move about. The E is used when you need to pick items up. For normal people this is not a problem. It is for me. Why?
Let me tell you a story… when I was eleven, I learned myself how to type. Where most kids on high school took typing lessons to learn how to type blind with ten fingers, I never did. So I have this very weird bastard form of typing in which I DO NOT USE my left index finger. I never really noticed until Tijs or Olli pointed it out at some point. Yesterday Olli realized that this is the reason why I’m struggling at Portal — the left index finger is supposed to pick up items. I do not use that finger, so my left middle finger has to take up the slack. So when I have to move around again, my finger is located in the same spot.
Musing about this, I also realized that I always mess about with my index fingers: in bass playing, I favour my middle fingers as well. Opening cans? Same thing. Anyway, that’s just me sucking I suppose. I do think it’s rather fascinating.
So I’m impaired twice over…. meh! It won’t stop me from enjoying the game, though. Portal is really a great game
